| I really enjoyed this race in difficult
wet conditions. Katrina and Hollie (our youngest daughter) came to watch and
we dropped off Jo on the way. We were a bit late but had enough time to get
my number and make the way to the start. I met up with a number of
Kilbarchan runners and saw Ian just before the start. Donald warned me that it is a quite a hilly course and not to expect a quick time. The route is a two lap course which I thought was good in that you know what is coming during the second lap. But it can also be tough knowing what is to come. Depends on how you look at it!! I set off keeping Ian in view and we ran together for the first couple of kilometres. Then one of the hills came and I pushed past Ian following a couple of other runners. At about the 4k mark Ian came past and opened up a gap of 25 yards or so and basically he stretched that lead over the next 6k to finish about 40secs ahead of me. Near the end of the first lap the rain really came down heavily and it was hard going running into the rain and wind but it's the same for everyone! I felt I was running strongly and kept my place throughout the second lap. There were two other runners I was with and on each hill I pushed on and opened a gap but they came back at me on the downhill and straight bits. I finished in 39mins 36secs on my watch which I was very pleased with as it wasn't the easiest conditions and course. Ian finished just under 39mins and John McL was 30secs or behind. At the finish I met up with Marco who ran a pb and was very happy. Debs wasn't running but was taking lots of photos with her new camera. I also met up with Chris Upson at the finish. Chris has entered the whw race for this year and is a very strong runner. It will be interesting how he fits in training with all the other races he does. I walked back to the changing room with Ian discussing our race and plans for the next few months as we train for the whw. So Ian is 1-0 up and on target to beat me in every race!! I saw Donald and Tommy from Kilbarchan at the prize giving. Donald was happy with his run and thankfully his back was fine. Tommy came 6th overall and thinks he was first vet home so that was excellent. Hollie took quite a few video clips so I'll put those together as soon as possible!! This picture taken at home with my medal. The goodie bag was very good with this medal and a little whisky tumbler and mars bar. |
